Equine Ultrasound

Equine Ultrasound: Imaging Beyond the Surface

Ultrasound, also known as sonography, is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to create real-time images of your horse’s soft tissues. It allows us to “see” tendons, ligaments, muscles, internal organs, and even a developing foal—without any discomfort to your horse.

Why Is It Used?

Ultrasound is incredibly versatile and may be recommended for:

  • Lameness evaluations (tendon or ligament injuries)
  • Joint or soft tissue swelling
  • Back and pelvis assessments
  • Reproductive exams (pregnancy checks, follicle tracking, uterine health)
  • Colic evaluations
  • Chest or abdominal imaging (pleural fluid, abscesses, organ abnormalities)

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • Preparation: The area is clipped and cleaned to get a clear image. Gel is applied to help the sound waves travel from the probe into the body.
  • The Scan: We move a handheld probe gently over the area while viewing the images in real time on a screen.
  • Sedation: Most horses tolerate ultrasound well without sedation, depending on the area, although we may use mild sedation if needed for precise imaging or safety.

Safe and Painless

Ultrasound uses no radiation and is completely safe for repeated use—including during pregnancy checks. Your horse won’t feel anything except a bit of pressure and cool gel.

Fast and Informative

We’ll talk you through what we see during the scan and discuss any next steps, treatment, or follow-up if needed.
