Equine Osteopathic Adjustments
Equine Osteopathy: Supporting the Whole Horse
An osteopath uses gentle, manual techniques to assess and treat restrictions in movement across the entire body—muscles, joints, fascia, spine, and even internal systems.
What Happens During a Session?
- Initial Assessment: The practitioner will observe your horse’s posture, gait, and movement, followed by a hands-on examination.
- Treatment: Using techniques like soft tissue release, cranio-sacral therapy, joint mobilization, stretching, and fascial balancing, the osteopath works to restore normal mobility and reduce tension.
- Duration: Sessions usually last around 45–60 minutes. Some horses may need multiple treatments depending on the issue.
Why Might My Horse Need It?
Osteopathic treatment can benefit horses dealing with:
- Stiffness or uneven movement
- Performance or behavioral changes
- Back pain or poor saddle fit tolerance
- Unexplained lameness or gait abnormalities
- Recovery from injury or surgery
- Compensatory issues from hoof imbalance or dental problems
It can also be a great preventative tool to maintain overall comfort, especially for performance horses.
What to Expect After Treatment
Your horse might be a little tired or “loose” for a day or two. Most horses show signs of improvement in flexibility, comfort, and overall demeanor. Light work or turnout is usually recommended after a session, and your practitioner will guide you on aftercare.
Complementary Care
Osteopathy works well alongside veterinary care, dentistry, farriery, and training—making it an excellent part of a well-rounded wellness plan.
